35% of pupils achieve a clean sweep of A* and A grades

5 pupils accepted at Oxbridge

A level examination results day at Merchiston saw the usual flurry of activity in School as many of last year's UVI leavers came back to open their results envelopes.

There were many happy faces: Merchiston's A level pass rate this year was 100%. Moreover, of the 260 individual candidate results, 63 gained A* (24%) and an impressive 164 (63%) gained grades A*/A; the School's combined A*, A, and B grade pass rate was a highly gratifying 84%: this is Merchiston's best ever set of A level results.

An amazing 35% (27) boys achieved a clean sweep of A* and As at A level. Of these, Benny Koo, who joined the School in First Form 2003 achieved 6 A*, an outstanding achievement at the end of his school career. Other noteable results; a pupil with 5 A* and 5 pupils with 4 A*s.

Additionally, 23 Lower and Upper Sixth candidates entered SQA Higher examinations in five subject areas: the A-C grade pass rate was 88%. Boys in the Lower Sixth year group also took AS exam units; these results will contribute towards their A level grades next summer.

Five Merchiston pupils have gained entry to Oxbridge: Gavin Medicine at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge; Sam Engineering at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge; Benny Engineering at Peterhouse College, Cambridge; Tom Theology at Regents Park College, Oxford and John Natural Science at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Andrew Hunter, Headmaster comments, This is always a very interesting and important part of the academic year. For some boys, it is the culmination of a 10 year journey at Merchiston. Others will have had shorter journeys. I am absolutely delighted with the quality of the A level results. They speak volumes for the staff and how the boys are inspired to aspire to do the best they can possibly do. The A2 results are very, very impressive. The combination of the natural brightness of many of these boys and the attention, care and professionalism from staff has resulted in our best ever A level results. I think what matters is the capacity of the staff, the ethos, approach and drive of the whole school to dig that little deeper and find that little bit extra/that cutting edge.
