Merchiston is very proud to have nine current pupils representing Scotland in rugby in the U16 and U18 age groups. The School is pleased that so many pupils will be pulling on the blue jersey at this stage of their careers. Roddy Deans, Director of Rugby at Merchiston comments: “As a school we are delighted to have nine Merchiston boys selected in the most recent U16 & U18 Scotland training squads. This is a just reward for their hard work, commitment and dedication to our rugby programme. I always talk about ‘money in the bank’ and all of these players have fully engaged in our weekly field, strength and conditioning, video analysis and goal setting sessions. This has allowed them to further develop and perform consistently well over the season. They will now be tested at an international level of competition which will enhance their game even further. My job as Director of Rugby is to give our boys the best possible opportunity to develop on and off the field. Our Rugby programme develops their skills and game sense on the field and instils the much needed core values off the field. We are very lucky to have an outstanding and committed set of coaches from P6 through to U18. I fully believe this gives our boys a very strong foundation from an early age. It is very pleasing to have nine players in the current training squads as one of my main outcome goals is to produce as many district and national players as possible. It really helps our Rugby pathway, when our boys watch ex-Merchistonians, such as; Fraser Brown (Glasgow Warriors), Zach Mercer (Bath), Stafford McDowall (Glasgow Warriors), Patrick Kelly (Glasgow Warriors), Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (Edinburgh), Scott Steele (London Irish), James Johnstone (Edinburgh) and Magnus Bradbury (Edinburgh) all playing at the highest level of professional Rugby. I am very hopeful the next crop of talent will be coming from this current group.”
