King Edward’s Witley celebrated World Book Day 2018 (Thursday 1st March) with the arrival of a special visitor to the School, the renowned American author Dr Mimi Thebo whose stories for young people have been praised for their ability to ‘capture an authentic teen voice’. Dr Thebo, a prize-winning poet and a lecturer in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, delivered an inspirational presentation to all pupils and staff on the far-reaching value of reading. This was followed by a creative workshop for Year 7 pupils, providing the exclusive opportunity for children at King Edward’s to improve their creative writing by drawing on the vast experience and proven expertise of an established and recognised author. Zari, a Year 7 day girl from Bramley, said, “I really enjoyed meeting Dr Thebo and listening to her talk. During the morning, we worked in groups learning how to construct a story and then performed it to everyone in the Workshop. I found it all really interesting and helpful, and it’s giving me lots of ideas for my own story writing.” Dr Thebo commented, “I had a terrific morning at King Edward’s School, where there is already an entrenched engagement with reading and a real love of books. The pupils in my Workshop were bright, creative, and did some marvellous writing. There is a great deal of talent at King Edward’s...I think the literary world might hear from some of them in the future!”
