Canford House Art 2018

Published Tuesday 27th of March 2018 10:15:25 AM

Artists and designers have a social responsibility to use creativity to improve the way we live and to challenge our way of thinking. With this in mind, this year’s Canford House Art competition followed the RSPB initiative to ‘Save the Swifts’, after a 51% decrease in their breeding numbers in the UK between 1995 and 2015 which has made swifts an amber-listed species. Pupils were challenged to both create a campaign and design a limited edition swift bird box. Campaigns were open to interpretation, perhaps posters, flyers, a social media presence or even a short film. Presentations of the bird boxes and the campaigns were made on 7th March to Dr Jane Taylor, RSPB Green Infrastructure Champion and Alice Stevens from the Arts University Bournemouth. The judges were very impressed by all the entries. The overall trophy for strategic thinking was awarded to Lancaster, who introduced the idea of value by using branding and the idea of the bird box being designed as a simple house brick. The piece questioned the value we attribute to objects and the wild life we are in danger of losing if the swift breed continues to decline. It questions what is important in our modern lives and the extent that we will go to help. The film piece added a human aspect to the campaign and an element of fun. In the cup award for best collaboration and audience engagement, Marriotts were the winners for the way they utilised the skills and energies of the house to involve people; communicating the focus of the campaign whilst also producing a strong collaborative project. The folded paper swifts are a subtle and clever presentation of the facts, a clear vehicle for thought and recognisable motif. The work of Michael Brennand-Wood was interpreted cleverly also including intricate paper swifts and this strong visual creates a memorable object. Well done to all the houses for their hard work and inspirational results.
