Merchiston is pleased to be taking part in the Help a South African School campaign by HORTGRO. The organisation has asked schools to donate used books to help increase the literacy levels in regions of South Africa where such resources are scarce. Merchiston has donated six boxes of textbooks to help aid the education of young people in South Africa. It is extremely important for our pupils to gain a solid understanding of the world in which we live, a world where two-thirds of the population lives in poverty. Our boys live in a very comfortable world and, without imposing a sense of guilt, we encourage them to see where our privileged status and resources can help improve the lives of others. Charitable giving, both in terms of time and money, has therefore been key to our understanding of human activity, driven by the Christian ideal of ‘love your neighbour’. HORTGRO, The South African fruit industry, is ‘giving UK school children the opportunity to learn about South Africa and the chance to win one of three cash prizes to spend on school resources AND a bespoke workshop by BBC presenter Stefan Gates. All they ask in return is that you produce a collage and donate your unwanted books to their underprivileged farm and rural schools ‘ For more information about HORTGRO, please visit their website: http://helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk/
