Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 from Barrow Hills School recently enjoyed a wonderful interactive learning experience when illustrator and children’s author Andréa Prior visited the school to share her debut book ‘A Parcel of Pigs and Other Funny Tails’ (a collection of quirky children’s rhymes). Andréa spent her childhood years living in a safari park where she worked as a Park Ranger in ‘Pet’s Corner’ and her love of animals, combined with her passion for illustration and writing appealing children’s verse is the inspiration behind her new creative masterpiece. As well as treating the children to a reading from the new book and encouraging them to join in with the funny tongue twisters, Andréa provided an insight into the work of an author and illustrator and spent time explaining how her first book came about. The children were also fascinated to see some of the original sketches of the characters featured in the book and to witness how the final illustrations had developed from the initial concept. Comments included: Charlie “It was very funny and I enjoyed it very much” Jasper “I like how you produced the book and presented it to us” Timo “It was the best book I’ve ever heard” Amelie “I like the poetic style of the book” Montgomery “I love the detail” Ilana “It was hilarious” Sue Pulleyn, Head of Pre-Prep at Barrow Hills and organiser of the author visit said, “The children enjoyed meeting Andréa and were really happy to engage in some of the hilarious rhymes which feature in the book. I’m sure she inspired many of our budding authors / illustrators to keep working at their craft – as well as motivating those who perhaps had previously not considered these career choices!”
