The Edelweiss Pirates

Bedford School's newly formed Boycott Theatre Company performed its first play, The Edelweiss Pirates, on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May to great acclaim. The newly formed in-house company was created to provide excellent opportunities for the school's Fourth Form and Remove Form boys to explore and perform new and exciting plays written for young people. The Edelweiss Pirates, by Arub Din, one of ten new plays commissioned for young people by the National Theatre, is the true story of a group of teenagers who rose up against the Nazis, despite knowing the terrible price they may pay for their convictions. Drama teacher and the play’s director, Caroline Millington, selected The Edelweiss Pirates as it "seemed a perfect choice for our newly formed Boycott Theatre Company, offering opportunities for interesting characterisation and providing the boys with a challenging subject matter to explore." Speaking after the curtain fell she commented, “It was an absolute pleasure to work with the boys on this project, and I have been so impressed with their maturity when dealing with such a sensitive and challenging subject matter. I am immensely proud of their achievements, and I look forward to Boycott Theatre Company’s next chapter.”
