ACS Egham recently hosted accomplished cellist, Mark Sheridan, and fantastic pianist, Caroline Jaya-Ratnam for a special one night only concert attended by students, staff and members of the local community. Mark Sheridan and Caroline Jaya-Ratnam played pieces from four composers including Debussy's Cello Sonata; Brahms' Sonata for Cello and Piano number one in E Minor opus.38; Chopin's Berceuse op. 57 and Waltz in E minor; and lastly, Beethoven's Sonata for Cello and Piano number three in A op. 69. For an encore they played "The Swan" from "The Carnival of the Animals" by Saint-Saens. Each piece was first introduced by Irina Walters, Head of Music at ACS Egham, who provided the historical context for each performance. Mark Sheridan, who has been a part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 1986, studied cello at the Royal Northern College of Music. Caroline Jaya-Ratnam has performed on BBC Radio 3 and appeared at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. At the end of the evening, Irina Walters, chaired an 'In Conversation With' session with the performers, taking questions from the audience. Irina commented: "We had some fantastic, challenging questions from the audience such as: 'what advice would you give to the students who want to make music their profession and to the ones that want to study it for pleasure?' The concert provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to see such outstanding talent and musical passion firsthand."
