Published by Bedford Upper School on Saturday 7th of July 2018
Bedford School Fifth Former Flik Feng will spend his first week of the summer holidays working with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as a student on the ‘Very Young Composers Workshop’. Flik was one of just ten talented young composers (out of around 1000) who won a place on this prestigious week-long workshop in Shanghai. The two world-class orchestras will come together for the ‘Music in the Summer Air’ (MISA) concert in the first week of July. During the week Flik will work with Jon Deak, the Young Composer Advocate of the New York Philharmonic, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Teaching Artists, as well as musicians from both orchestras. The workshop will culminate in the two orchestras performing Flik’s composition at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Chamber Concert Hall. Flik’s winning composition is a piano trio, which he composed with the help of Bedford School’s Logic software. Flik started composing music in Year 7 at Bedford Prep School in his Music Technology classes, using Logic and Sibelius music notation software. Flik has a strong musical background. He has been awarded an ABRSM Diploma in Piano, has passed Grade 8 in Singing, and is starting to learn the flute. He is a member of the Bedford School Chapel Choir and one of the school’s chapel organists.
