Renowned designer Kate Raath visits Norwich High School

Designer Kate Raath, a former Norwich High School pupil, visited her old school on Monday 26th September to see the Year 11 GCSE Design Technologists in action and to talk with interested girls at lunchtime about her own career path in Design.

It was great to see Kate and show her the developments at Norwich High School, commented Mr Rothwell. I was delighted that she could share some of her experiences with our current young Designers and talk to them about their own design work. The girls thoroughly enjoyed seeing her portfolio and were captivated by her explanation of the world of real design. My grateful thanks to Kate for giving us her time and helping the girls from her own personal experience and expertise.

Ms Raath joined Norwich High in September 1989 the same day as Mr Rothwell, Head of Design Technology at the Newmarket Road school! She completed her GCSEs including Design Technology (CDT as it was called in those days) and then, along with two other students, asked if she could study Advanced Design Technology. They were the first girls to take the subject to A level at Norwich, and possibly the first in The Girls Day School Trust. Kate left in 1996 and went on to study Design at Central St Martins in London whose design graduates include Sir Terence Conran, founder of Habitat, Stella McCartney and the late Alexander McQueen. Kate went to work in Moscow as Lead Designer for a Russian company and more recently has been made Director of Design for the American arm of a multi-national advertising and promotions company, based in New York, where she lives and works.

The school hopes to organise similar events in the future. If anyone knows of other former Norwich High students who are currently involved in product design, architecture or design technology, please contact Mr Rothwell at the school.
