Mayfield Poetry Festival 2018

Published Monday 1st of October 2018 11:42:09 AM

The acclaimed poet Sinéad Morrissey will read to GCSE and A level students at Mayfield School on Thursday 4th October. Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University, Dr Morrissey’s latest poetry collection On Balance won the Forward Prize for Poetry 2017. She also won the T.S Eliot Poetry Prize in 2014 for the collection Parallax. Morrissey is originally from Northern Ireland and is considered one of the finest contemporary poets. The chair of the T.S Eliot judging panel in 2014, Ian Duhig, remarked that her collection was 'politically, historically and personally ambitious, expressed in beautifully turned language, her book is as many-angled and any-angled as its title suggests.' We are excited to be able to host a reading of Sinéad Morrissey here at Mayfield School. She follows in the footsteps of Gillian Clark, Robin Robertson, Kei Miller, Mimi Khalvati, Patience Agbabi and many other significant poets. There is a renaissance in contemporary poetry in this country at the moment which is reflected in the literature syllabi of both the GCSE and A level courses. It is important that students get the opportunity to recognise poets as living bards. Adults who would like to hear Dr Morrissey are invited to attend a reading on the evening of Thursday October 4th in the Courtyard of Mayfield School at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5.00 and are available to reserve from reception at Mayfield School: Telephone 01435 874600
