Copper Poppy Commemoration Project

Published Thursday 4th of October 2018 03:33:33 PM

The Blue Coat School Birmingham has launched their Copper Poppy Project to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I. With the assistance of Artist-in-Residence, Stephen Whitehead, the Creative Arts Department led an assembly to introduce the project; together with memorabilia and artefacts from WW1. Amongst the artefacts was a Roll of Honour listing former pupils that had served in the first half of The Great War. A Poppyometer will record the number of coppy poppies made by the school with the aim of making as close to 2018 as possible. A blue coat button will form the centre of each piece of cut copper that has been bashed to give it texture. Each poppy will either be boxed or used to make a commemorative art piece. The memorable Poppy Field and Wreath created four years ago has provided the inspiration for this very special project which will involve the whole school community. Headmaster Mr Neeson and his wife made the very first poppy and the children have now begun to make their own creations in lesson time.
