Canford artists exhibit at London gallery

Our Upper Sixth artists were thrilled to have the opportunity to exhibit their Pre-U work in London recently, at 6 Ryder Street, SW1, work which was highly praised by the examiners last summer with much of it graded at Distinction level. Head of Art Nicola Will explained the background to the ‘Telling Stories’ exhibition which was held over the weekend of 13th/14th October. “As artists we use stories to make sense of our world and to share that understanding with our communities. ‘Telling Stories’ is the final collection of work from the Upper Sixth cohort which aims to present the various narratives that exist in the very individual bodies of work. Ideas encompassing domesticity, loss, nostalgia and sexuality are explored though experiments with media including film, textiles, drawing and painting.” Over 50 members of the Canford community including the artists, their families and friends enjoyed a private view of the work on Friday evening. Many of the pupils involved have now taken up places on Art Foundation courses at top colleges and universities. Headmaster Ben Vessey commented: “This was a unique chance for our talented artists to showcase their excellent work in a wonderful gallery setting in the heart of the London art world. It was a memorable weekend not only for the pupils but also for Canford Art and all those associated with the school with an artistic interest. We are extremely grateful to the Ryder Street gallery and also to Mr and Mrs John Kalmanson, as without their support this exhibition would not have been possible."
