Outstanding in the Classroom - Top of the Tables for A Levels in Scotland

Our latest academic results ensure that we are once again outstanding off the field as we retain our spot at the top of the tables when it comes to A Level performance among Scotland’s independent schools. Merchiston achieved a formidable 50% A-A* rate and a 77% A*-B rate, the only school in Scotland to achieve this high standard. With 21% of pupils achieving an A* this is more than double the national A* attainment of 8.3% (ISC, 2018). As a non-selective school that caters for a wide ability range these are exceptional results. “We are very fortunate at Merchiston to be able to provide genuine and intensive personalised academic support for each of our pupils, and this underlies our formidable record of academic success as a school. We have real confidence in this pupil-centred approach, and believe it to be sector-leading.” Deputy Head Academic, Stephen Campbell “As a school it is our goal to add value to each and every boy’s journey to enable each of them to thrive in a caring community which identifies and nurtures their talents. Through the hard work of the pupils and the dedicated guidance of the academic and pastoral teams, we have secured some excellent outcomes. The reformed A Levels continued to emphasise increased stretch and challenge; and I am delighted that Merchiston has once again delivered excellence in this new context, going way beyond the national average across the board.” Headmaster, Jonathan Anderson
