HRH Prince Edward Duke of Kent Visits Duke of York's Royal Military School

Published Thursday 17th of October 2019 03:34:40 PM

HRH Prince Edward Duke of Kent presented berets to new students of the Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover, at a special Beret Parade service during the autumn term.

Prince Edward has been president and then patron of DOYRMS for some 44 years, attending the school’s Grand Day on some occasions and other ceremonial events.

The annual tradition takes place once Year 7 students have completed a period of parade training after joining the school in September. While regular school uniform is worn most of the time, the beret is an essential part of each student’s ceremonial No.1 Dress (Blues) for parades and special occasions.

Due to inclement weather, the berets were presented in the School Chapel, and Prince Edward was assisted by Principal Alex Foreman. Good conduct medals were also given to Senior Under Officer Alfred Perkins, Head Boy Ashiph Rai, Chief School Prefect Sophie O’Smotherly and Head Girl Jordanna Ramsey. Alfred Perkins presented Prince Edward with the school tie in appreciation of his visit.

Receiving the beret is the start of a student’s career as a Dukie and the many opportunities this presents throughout life – once a Dukie, always a Dukie. Students can also wear the cap badge of a family member who has served in the armed forces on their dress Blues. It is called their ‘heart badge’ and is a poignant recognition of their family's military heritage.

Alex Foreman said: “It was a privilege for our students to receive their berets and medals from HRH Prince Edward Duke of Kent, and a proud moment for their parents – our Chapel was packed. He has been a great supporter of our school for many years, and his visits are always a warm experience. Our military ceremonies remind us of our heritage and ethos that develops courage, integrity, respect, commitment, loyalty, and self-discipline.”
