Gamelan Music Experience

Published Thursday 16th of January 2020 11:23:01 AM

Pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 experienced a hands-on Indonesian Gamelan music workshop with visiting expert Mr Hamilton. The children learnt that the word gamelan comes from the Javanese word 'gamel' which means hammer. They used their gamels to play numbered patterns on metallophones, which did not include the allegedly cursed number 4! Each student had a go at striking a pitched gong, which Indonesians believed sent specific messages to God. The children learnt so much from this exciting session!
