Pupils have their cake but can they eat it?

Our school caterers, Holroyd Howe had children gasping at lunchtime on World Book Day, as they unveiled a ginormous Bruce Bogtrotter Cake! Fans of Roald Dahl's Matilda will remember that Bruce Bogtrotter was the little boy that stole a piece of chocolate cake from Miss Trunchbull. As punishment, he then had to consume an entire cake in front of the whole school! Luckily there was no stealing of cake going on at The Blue Coat School but instead a raffle was held to win the cake and raise money for Children of the Mountain, a charity that focuses on the poorest areas of Nepal, building primary schools, kindergartens, creative classrooms, and providing teacher training. Congratulations to Louis and Jasmine who were both winners, as our caterers kindly made not one but two huge chocolate cakes! Elsewhere on World Book Day, many famous characters could be spotted. From Where’s Wally to Harry Potter and everyone else in between, a brilliant time was had by all and it certainly inspired our love of reading even further! As usual the BCS staff also embraced the day wholeheartedly and delighted the children with their costumes. They day began with a whole school assembly, followed by a range of fun activities to do with this year’s theme of ‘sharing a story’. The children particularly enjoyed buddy reading and our older Prep pupils visited the younger children in Pre-Prep. The damp weather could not deter the enthusiasm of all the children and staff at Blue Coat, who embraced the day in high spirits, while sharing their love of books and authors together. It was a perfect opportunity to appreciate books and to develop the benefits of reading for pleasure, which stretch throughout an individual’s life.
