The Elms Junior School has received national recognition for its commitment to promoting international awareness and understanding in its pupils. The International School Award is run by the British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, and has been praised by ministries of education and school inspection bodies across the world for supporting international learning in the classroom. At The Elms, we are passionate about helping every child develop the skills they need to become a global citizen. A global citizen is someone who understands the wider world and works with others to make our planet a fairer and more sustainable home for everyone. By teaching children about global citizenship, we empower them to make a difference to the world they live in. Together with our senior school Trent College, we are committed to providing a variety of learning opportunities that will get pupils thinking about the world around them. Cultural trips and celebrations develop our pupils’ understanding and appreciation for people who have different backgrounds, while our inspiring modern foreign languages programme gives children as young as four the opportunity to begin learning the basics in French, German and Spanish. WHAT WILL OUR PUPILS GAIN FROM THIS AWARD? Increased knowledge and awareness of other countries and cultures Confidence in communicating with people from different backgrounds The skills to live and work successfully in our global society Enhanced literacy skills from writing stories and letters to a new audience Improved ability and confidence in language speaking skills Our pupils will also benefit from exciting opportunities to learn alongside children from across the world. As part of the award’s e-twinning scheme, The Elms will have the chance to pair with schools in other countries and deliver collaborative, 21st century learning experiences, such as shared lessons via video call. WHAT WILL WE GAIN AS A SCHOOL? Exclusive access to staff development courses from the British Council An extra dimension to our pupils’ learning and development that is currently only provided by a select number of schools The opportunity to work and connect with schools abroad, leading to new knowledge and shared learning opportunities Most importantly, the support The Elms will receive from the International School Award programme will benefit the school community as a whole and enable us to explore new and exciting ways to incorporate global citizenship into our curriculum.
