Mayfield School: Collaboration and Community Key to Remote Learning Success

Students and staff at Mayfield School did a fantastic job of embracing technology and a whole new level of online learning in their final week of term last week. With pupils logging into each class in line with the normal timetable for face-to-face lessons with their individual subject teachers, chatting to each other, and completing work tasks online, life in the Mayfield community continued ‘almost’ as normal for the girls. With remote Art, Ceramics, Textiles, and Food and Nutrition Classes, not to mention LAMDA and individual music lessons taking place as usual, alongside academic subjects, the girls created masterpieces in their own homes, including a fabulous selection of ‘alternative’ Easter Cakes. The PE Department recorded a range of exercise videos for the girls to access from home, and suggested all sorts of ways for them to remain active. From Yoga and Zumba, to HIIT work-outs and running, the girls have been keeping a daily log of the exercise they have been taking. Year 8 Flo said: “I have found the online lessons really enjoyable. I’ve loved going to my ‘kitchen school’ every day, and it has been great to have interaction with my friends and teachers, and not just doing worksheets at home on my own.” Feedback from parents has been equally positive and they have welcomed the stability provided to their daughters by the familiar structure of the school day at this very uncertain time. Girls have remained productive during the day and, just as importantly, have maintained close contact with their teachers and friends, wherever they are in the world. Mayfield is also collaborating with Wadhurst Manor Care Home on a ‘penpal programme’ so that the girls can correspond with residents during what is likely to be a very lonely time for them, as they are currently unable to receive visitors. We hope that this will provide some comfort and entertainment for all concerned. Headmistress, Miss Antonia Beary, said; “I am proud of our girls and staff who have risen to the challenges that rapidly moving to remote learning has posed. They have all been successful in responding to a new way of working, with girls and staff helping each other, and surprising themselves by what they have achieved! I am delighted that the sense of collaboration and community, which is at the heart of Mayfield’s ethos, continues online. We will ensure that we build on this network of support and learning until we are able to return to school.”
