On Thursday 16th September, King Edward’s Witley, together with partner prep school and nursery Barrow Hills School, welcomed Jazz Carlin, Rio 2016 Double Olympic Silver Medallist for an inspirational day and a ‘Bridewell Talk’ presentation to parents in the evening.
Jazz began by delivering a talk to Year 9 and 10 girls at King Edward’s, followed by a presentation to King Edward’s sports ‘Elite Performance Pathway’ pupils. Jazz then ran a swimming masterclass for the King Edward’s Witley swim squad joined by children from Barrow Hills School.
During the day, Jazz was open and honest about her journey to success, emphasising that throughout her years of training and practice, it was hugely important to keep her mental focus engaged to overcome adversity. She said: “If you looked at me in the pool, you wouldn’t have seen me as a stand-out swimmer, but I loved it”, when speaking about the importance of never giving up on your dream.
Jazz spoke about how she had become engrossed in swimming from an early age, “Ever since I can remember, I loved being in the water, it quickly became that enjoyable place with my Dad. Both my parents have brought that positivity to my life. I have fond memories of sport from a very young age having been brought up with a healthy lifestyle, and looking back it was definitely the best thing for me.”
The 2012 UK Olympics’ dream was an event that Jazz missed qualification for as she was recovering from Glandular Fever. It was a time in her life that caused her to feel “numb.” However, the support she received from her parents, her coach and her friends kept her going to the next Olympic Games where in Rio she won a silver medal in the 400 metres freestyle and the 800 metres freestyle.
The day concluded with Jazz giving a thoughtful presentation on the importance of wellbeing to parents and invited guests from local prep and primary schools. The following morning was her birthday and the Music Scholars at King Edward’s gave Jazz a wonderful musical surprise by singing ‘Happy Birthday’!
Mrs Joanna Wright, Head at King Edward’s, commented: “It was a truly special day and I would like to thank Jazz for her inspirational words to our parents, guests, and girls and boys at both Bridewell schools.”
