King Edward’s Witley teacher wins European championship gold

Mrs Anel Meyer, teacher of Mathematics and swimming coach at King Edward’s Witley, won her age group and became European Champion at the European Triathlon Union Championships in Valencia on 26th September. Anel competed in the 40-44 age group with triathletes from across Europe, winning Gold in her category.

To prepare for the European Championships, Anel spoke about the training she started four years ago, simply as a mum with two children with a goal to become fitter. Alongside her colleague, Mrs Julie Hinton, teacher of German, they began regularly participating in local triathlons together but always made time to swim for fun, making great use of the 25m swimming pool at King Edward’s.

Anel excelled in the sport to the point where she was recommended to attempt to qualify for the GB team, which became her 40th birthday goal. Anel was successful and the training for the European Championships intensified. She received training support from Vicky Gill and Performance Chef who helped her balance her nutrition and personal health, and to train with likeminded people from Precision Racing. Anel also found a way to incorporate her new lifestyle and training regime into her family life. “It’s really made us a healthier and more active family” said Anel.

“There is now a family motto on my kitchen wall all about hard work and dedication.” Anel dedicated her win to her supportive family and highlighted the fact that “anyone can do it, it just requires that level of dedication, including waking up for 5am training sessions and sticking to a strict schedule!”

Anel would like to extend her thanks to Precision Racing and Vicky for all of their support.

Mrs Joanna Wright, Head at King Edward’s Witley said “I would like to extend my congratulations to Anel for her amazing achievement at the European Triathlon Championship. You are such an inspiration for all of our girls and boys here at the School.”
