An Inspector Calls

Published by Abercorn School on Monday 26th of September 2022

One would think that a short week would be uneventful, although this is rarely the case within a school. Schools are (and should be) busy places that are bustling with activity, and this is certainly the case when an inspector calls. As you will know, this is not a reference to Inspector Goole from JB Priestley’s play, but to our visit this week from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

Thank you to those parents who were able to fill in the ISI parents’ questionnaire – although we do not receive the results of this survey to publish to parents, your contributions help support a smooth inspection. All children have made a contribution to the inspection too, by working hard, trying their best, showing kindness to each other and being well behaved: Some even had the privilege of being interviewed by the inspection team: from reports, this sounds as though it was a wonderful and entertaining experience for all concerned, which does not surprise me at all. As I explained in my letter to you all earlier this week, although the inspection finished today it can take several months for us to receive the report and findings. We will share the full report with all of our families directly and also place it on our website as soon as we are able to do so.

Inspection aside, the British weather has been experimenting with autumnal conditions this week. Please could we remind parents and carers that school coats should be brought into school this term? We endeavour to give the children time outside whenever possible, but need to make sure they stay dry if it is drizzling.

Finally, I hope you were able to experience some of The Queen’s funeral and procession on the Bank Holiday Monday. Although a rightly sombre occasion, the pomp and ceremony was fascinating to see alongside a major cultural and historical event. My thoughts remain with the Royal Family during their extended period of mourning, and with Charles III (which still feels strange to write) as he takes on the role and responsibilities as king.

All the best for the weekend, whatever you are up to.
