Young Masterchefs get together for a bake-off at Blundell's School

Blundell's Prep School in Devon hosted a Junior Masterchef competition for four other local schools, when fifty-six Year 2 pupils learned how to make and bake bread rolls and then had their creations judged by a professional chef.

The children worked in mixed groups to produce cottage rolls and hedgehog rolls. After the weighing, kneading, baking and tasting, their finished rolls were judged by Chef Jean-Christophe Le Grand of Woods Restaurant, Dulverton. The best bread-maker from each school was awarded the title of BPS Masterchef 2012 and a smart apron printed with the accolade.

Andy Southgate, Head Master of Blundell's Prep School, said 'This was a great opportunity for all the children taking part to come together, learn new skills and have fun. I'm delighted to host this event in the school's food technology room and hope this event will lead to other schools using the wonderful facilities here again in the future.'

After the competition, Jean-Christophe treated pupils and their parents to a culinary master class, when he demonstrated how to prepare and cook simple but sophisticated food.
