Read All About It: Journalism At Kingham Hill

Published by Kingham Hill School on Thursday 9th of March 2023

This weekend at Kingham Hill School, Sally Hunt, founder of Journalism For Schools, led an introduction day about journalism.

Sally has been in journalism for over 35 years, reporting on everything from meeting celebrities to witnessing murder trials, to editing and running newspapers and magazines. She says that however different people may look, ‘they all operate under the same principle.

Journalism was always a lifelong dream of Sally’s, and her work has taken her all over the world to lead seminars and teach on the subject.

According to Sally, the skills required to be a good journalist are being good at writing, understanding the news and knowing how to write a good story. Being interested in everything going on around you is also important.

Journalism, she said, lets you discover things about the world and the people in it; things that you would never have come across in other fields. There are many benefits, like having the most interesting job when talking with your friends, being able to have a huge impact - for the better - on people’s lives, and knowing weird and wacky facts about people and events.

One pupil had this to say about the event: ‘I really enjoy reading the news and I have enjoyed finding out what is behind the stories’. Another pupil said that she had ‘really enjoyed looking at the stories, disassembling them, and figuring out how to write my own.’
