RAF Helicopter visits Merchiston

On Friday 27 April we had a visit from an RAF Puma HC1 helicopter from No. 33 Squadron based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire. This visit was facilitated by one of our parents, Air Vice-Marshall Paterson.

The aircraft, with its 6 crew members, is a major work horse of the RAF, being used mainly as a personnel transporter for up to 14 passengers. It is used for battlefield support and has seen extensive service in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Kosovo, the Balkans and is currently used in Kenya as part of the pre-deployment training for Service personnel before they go to Afghanistan.

In advance of the visit all the boys in Pringle had an illustrated talk about the work of the RAF today, including the career opportunities. The helicopter touched down noisily on the school field close to the old flag pole sight and was with us for around and hour and a quarter, during which time some 100 boys were able to see inside the aircraft and speak at liberty to all members of the crew.

On their way to Scotland the crew did some training with RAF Typhoon jets and helped train army reservists at RAF Leuchars over the weekend.
