Almost 4000 students took part in the first round of the 2012 British Biology Olympiad from 6-10 February. This round consisted of a multiple choice paper taken online in schools. Merchiston entered 16 boys from the Sixth Form and in the first round the boys gained two Gold medals (Laurence Cheung and Tim Balfour), two silver medals (Philip Moynihan and David Cox), three highly commended certificates and two commended certificates.

Following this success, and for the first year ever, Merchiston has won the title of 'Best School in Scotland' in the Biology Olympiad. It is also the first time the School has won Gold medals in this event. Pupils and staff are looking forward to the award ceremony in London on 20 June.
