Mayfield riders scoop National title at Hickstead

Riders from St Leonards-Mayfield School showed what they were made of when they rode to victory at the National Schools Junior Show Jumping Championships at Hickstead on Thursday 26 July.

Phoebe Toyne-Bridges, 14, from Wadhurst, Ellie Walker, 13, from Heathfield, and Millie Bresnahan, 14, from Heathfield, formed the winning team, and were among fifteen pupils from the East Sussex school to compete at the championships. The competition allows only three riders in a team, which means that every score counts, and therefore that every rider is under intense pressure! The Mayfield team were among ten teams to qualify for the final round, which was held in the Hickstead International Arena, jumping on the turf where only last week Team GBs Olympic hopefuls were competing at the Royal International Horse Show.

Despite the pressure and the grand scale of the event, all three girls jumped stylish rounds to produce an emphatic win, and to take the title most convincingly.

Jill Barker, Director of Riding commented, "This is one of the most significant Schools Championships in the country, so it is a massive achievement for our riders to be so successful here. This team won the National Schools Winter Novice Championships at Addington last year so they have had some experience of riding under pressure, but Hickstead took it to a whole new level, and I am immensely proud of how well they coped. There is no doubt that hard work and team training has played a large part in their success, but it is also due, in no small part, to the team spirit throughout the entire squad and how well they support each other. The whole squad should be very proud."
