Year 5 Super Sleuths

Published Monday 29th of October 2012 11:13:05 AM

School pupils turned into super scientific sleuths when the letters 'CSI' took on a dual meaning in Calne.

Children from St Margaret's Preparatory School took part in 'Calne Schools Investigate' when The Manor at adjoining St Mary's School became a Crime Scene Investigation to rival those on American TV shows.

They had to use scientific methods to work out who from six suspects had stolen a silver salt dish and conducted a number of different experiments using Bunsen burners and microscopes to solve the crime. A total of 34 children from Year Five at St Margaret's took part in the event helped by teacher Sarah Giles. Miss Giles said: 'It was a really fun way to approach science and all of the children enjoyed themselves. They put a lot of practical skills to use and learnt a lot from the exercise. Not all of the teams got the right answer but the majority found the culprit and they all realised how science can be used to catch criminals in real life.'
