Merchiston Castle Golf Academy pupil, Calum Hill, has signed a letter of intent to enrol at the University of Louisiana, Monroe, USA in the Autumn 2013 Semester.

Calum Hill from North Berwick who is a current associate SGU Academy player will be teaming up with fellow Scot Greg Smail who recently transferred from the University of Louisville. Hill says "I can`t wait to get started. This has been a lifetime ambition of mine and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all at Merchiston who made this happen. I am so grateful."

Director of Golf at Merchiston and Hills coach Alan Murdoch was instrumental in him being offered a place at Monroe. Murdoch says," I am delighted for Calum. He is a fantastic young man who has worked extremely hard on both his golf and academics. He deserves this opportunity and I wish him well."

Merchistons Golf Academy is based both at the Schools 100 acre campus in Colinton, Edinburgh, where the boys - both boarding and day - participate in the Schools normal educational and social activities; and also at the nearby par 70 Kings Acre Golf Course, where coaching, practice and tutorial work take place. The boys also have access to all the facilities and sports expertise available at the School. This includes a fully-equipped fitness suite, swimming pool and sports hall, coupled with advice and mentoring from the Schools sports staff, the housemasters and tutors.

Murdoch himself is a past graduate from the same University. In fact Hill will be joining a list of past top Scottish players who attended ULM - Kenny Walker, Royal Burgess (Mens Scottish Internationalist) and Kenny Buchan, Peterhead (then Scottish Amateur Champion). Hill is looking forward to meeting up with Buchan, who still resides in Monroe.

ULM Head Mens Coach, Eric Hsu, is delighted Hill has signed. He says, "Calum comes with an impressive golfing record. I will be looking for him to make an initial impact. The Warhawks will definitely be turning some heads come September 2013."

Supporting Information

Merchiston is unique in Scotland (and, indeed, north of the Home Counties) as a boys boarding school with day pupils within it. We have strong and effective approaches to develop each boys personal achievements and boast an impressive record of helping boys excel far beyond their expected results at GCSE and A level. Our academic record is excellent and we are consistently in the top flight of independent schools in the UK. Pupils applications to the most prestigious colleges, within the UK and abroad, continue to meet with success.

Merchistons sporting programme plays an extremely important role in School life and the team of staff works hard to achieve excellence within a sport for all philosophy, offering training and competition in over 20 sports. At present, the School has internationalists in rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, shooting, table tennis and modern pentathlon.

Our main objective is to motivate pupils to try their hardest and to strive to achieve the highest levels possible in all areas - firstly, academic, then cultural, sporting, leadership and simply living together as part of a community. The modern way of life at Merchiston is therefore busy and exacting and we seek to maintain the delicate balance of priorities within and outwith the classroom. However, whilst revelling in the excellence of the sporting, musical and numerous other activities, we continue to emphasise the primacy of academic work, which is at the heart of the total curriculum.

Pastoral care underpins all aspects of Merchiston, for if the boys are not looked after, they cannot perform. Essentially, whilst we are concentrating on the academic platform of each boy alongside the importance of co-curricular activities, we also try to focus on developing boys who have a sense of values. We are wholly committed to nurturing each boys talents and believe passionately in recognising the importance of the learning and teaching of boys.
