Mr David Paterson
The Paterson family have owned the school since 1931 and David Paterson is the 4th member of the family to be Headmaster.
David was born and educated at the school and returned with his own young family 26 years ago to teach mathematics and subsequently took on the role of Deputy Headmaster. David became Headmaster in September 2016 and is committed to ensuring that boys thrive in a happy, stable and nurturing environment with emphasis placed on hard work, good manners , tolerance and mutual respect.
With a settled and committed staff, most of whom live on site with their own families, Woodcote provides an exceptionally caring and supportive environment for both Boarders and Day Boys. The school is in a rural location, whilst being easily accessible from London. Heathrow Airport is 30 minutes by car and Gatwick 45 minutes.
Applicants are invited to spend a 'taster day' at the school during which they are assessed in a classroom environment.Scholarships are available and awarded at the Headmaster's discretion for boys who show potential or ability in academics, sport, music and/or art. With an average class size of 10, boys are, of course, treated as individuals with strong emphasis on academic achievement. The younger forms are taught in their own wing; the older forms are streamed. Scholarships to senior schools are won regularly, and there is also extra help available for those who encounter difficulties.
Acting, art and music are considered very important, as are public speaking, good manners and fun. Rugby, football, cricket and hockey are coached to a high standard and there are teams at all levels of age and ability, with a high success rate for a small school. Other sports include tennis (the school has five courts), swimming, athletics, golf, judo, polo, squash, trampolining and rifle-shooting. Woodcote also has a Warhammer Dungeon!
Woodcote offers a unique education laying the vital foundations to prepare boys for the challenges that lie ahead and giving them the necessary skills, confidence and enthusiasm with which to succeed. Most importantly, we pride ourselves in preparing boys for their next school and finding the right senior school for each boy.
