Rugby Star Trains With 1st XV

Published on isbi School News dated Monday 21st of January 2013

On Tuesday 4th December, Ben Woods, recently retired Leicester Tigers player, came to Trent College to take a coaching session with our 1st XV Rugby squad.

Graham Walker, uncle to Sixth Former Kate, successfully bid for this opportunity at a Charity Auction for the British Neurological Research Trust, who support the University College of London research programme concerned with stem cell therapy for spinal injury repair.
Our 22 members of the team benefited from training and advice in off-loading through contact skills and conditional games. In addition, Ben gave the boys some tips from the professional game on skills and game understanding.

The session was great timing as the Trent 1st XV are now down to the last 32 teams in the country in the Daily Mail Cup competition, with the next game against Warwick School taking place on 12th December.

As a thank you, the boys have decided to all make personal donations to the Matt Hampson Trust. Matt is a former England and Leicester Tigers player, who was paralysed from the neck down after an accident when practicing with the England U21 team. He has previously visited Trent College and does a huge amount for young people who suffer spinal injuries whilst playing sport.
