Our U15 Rugby 7 Win the Surrey Schools Shield

Published on isbi School News dated Friday 8th of March 2013

Twenty four schools competed in the U15 Surrey Schools Rugby Sevens competition on 7 March. Caterham School hosted the event and the Caterham U15 squad won the shield competition.

Their first game in the tournament was against Whitgift, the eventual Cup winners. Caterham lost this match and this meant that they would not progress in the Cup. Caterham responded to this setback by defeating Riddledown Collegiate 38-0. This was all the more impressive because Riddledown subsequently went on to win the Medal competition.

A narrow defeat to Hampton School in the quarter final of the Bowl competition saw Caterham move into the semi final of the Shield. In this section they defeated Ibstock Place School 38-12 and so moved into the Shield final where they beat Ernest Bevin College 33-5.

Director of Sport, Rob Clarke said: 'I am delighted for the team. They had to show a lot of character and determination to put the defeat against Whitgift behind them and move on to play some excellent 7s rugby. Throughout the day they showed great discipline in defence and patience in attack. The whole squad played very well and they scored some excellent tries but half-backs George Robinson and Marcus Hodgkinson played particularly well, pulling the strings as top half backs should. Overall, it was a great day of rugby.'
