Ffynone Chemical Olympiad Team win the South West Wales Region

Ffynone Chemical Olympiad Team win the South West Wales Region for the second year in a row!

A team of pupils from Ffynone House School in Uplands has won the South West Wales Region Chemical Olympiad for the second year in a row. The semi-finals and finals were held in the Taliesin Arts Theatre in Swansea University today (30th November). The pupils beat strong competition from Olchfa Comprehensive and Gwernyfed High School in Brecon to claim the title.

The Ffynone team will now go on to represent the South West Wales region in the national Royal Society of Chemistry 'Top of the Bench' competition which last year was held at Loughborough University.
The pupils, who are a completely new team and all from different year groups, Myles Dyer (Year 11), Charlotte Werner (Year 10), Isabel Jiménez-Reid (Year 9) and Sophie Quinn (Year 8) had to answer questions on a range of chemical concepts testing their knowledge and understanding of chemistry.

As Ffynone House School were last years winners the team had a by into the second round where they beat Dwr-Y-Felin School in Neath. In the third round they beat Ysgol Coed Cae in Llanelli.
The pupils will now represent South West Wales in the UK 'Top of the Bench' competition. Last year the Ffynone Team came third in the UK. This will be the fourth time in six years that a Ffynone House School team has reached the United Kingdom finals following wins in 2004, 2005 and 2009-10.

Head teacher of Ffynone House School Nicola Walker congratulated the team, 'What an incredible achievement. The success reflects the hard work the individual pupils and Mrs Khaleel have put into their preparation for this competition and the emphasis we put onto each of the sciences in Ffynone House'.
