Ballet Rambert at Oundle

Published on isbi School News dated Friday 11th of October 2013

On Sunday 29 September, Oundle's Dance Studio was the venue for a visit from Alicia Frost, a dancer from the Ballet Rambert dance company.

Alicia, an experienced dancer who has been with the company for six years, spent the afternoon with a group of aspiring dancers from Oundle. The pupils took part in an intense session of learning techniques and formations from the dance that the company is currently touring.

Pupils, Antonia Simon (16) and Olivia Sellers (18) commented, 'Throughout the warm up everyone started to loosen up and become more comfortable and confident with adapting to the movement of contemporary dance. The dance was filled with rhythmic pulses and samba-inspired lines and curves, blended with a Brazilian style and contemporary dance technique.'

Housemistress, PE and Geography teacher, Marianne Smith commented, 'It was wonderful to see this group of dancers from all year groups work together to learn a completely new style of dance which they then put together into a successful performance in a relatively short space of time.'

The workshop provided a further opportunity to establish Dance as a significant part of the extracurricular activities at Oundle.

Thanks to a generous donation and the School's recognition of the importance of Dance, the conversion of a large teaching room in Old Dryden into a fully equipped Dance Studio has been taking place over the past two years. The vibrant new space makes use of the existing sprung floor (the room was once Laxton Junior School's gymnasium), has a mirrored wall and a full lighting rig and sound system.

Marianne concluded, 'The venue, now known simply as D5, is an exciting home for Dance at Oundle School and now hosts regular dance classes, workshops and occasional small-scale theatre pieces.'
