On the 24 November, 14 RAF cadets from Oundle School participated in the regionals of the Air Squadron Trophy Ground Training Competition at RAF Cranwell. There are 35 CCF RAF sections in the region with 16 competing on the day. Competition was fierce with the top teams changing place throughout the day. Overall, Oundle finished in an impressive 2nd place and will be joined by Kimbolton in representing the Eastern region at the national finals next year.

Sgt Emma Leong (17) commented, 'The team spent weeks practising various activities for the day: drill, command task, first aid, fitness, air recognition and shooting. First on the schedule was drill with Cdt Peter Anson (16) as drill commander. Although there were a few minor errors, the judges seemed pleased with our performance and the team was positioned in 3rd place.'

The bleep fitness test proved to be the team's weakest area but they still managed to finish 7th.

Eight members participated in the command task, led by Sgt Seb Nickols (17) who commented, 'This task was very simple, but was designed to test both my leadership skills and the teamwork of the team. The team performed well and came 5th."

The aircraft recognition test that followed was a computer programme with pictures and multiple choice answers. The team had revised quite hard for this and managed to finish 3rd. Meanwhile, the shooting team went off to the DCCT (digital shooting range) and finished in 6th place.

Last was First Aid, led by Sgt Emma Leong, who commented, 'The scenario was pretty intense and we had to use all our first aid skills including treating a head injury and performing CPR. The team worked together well successfully treating each casualty, finishing in 4th in First Aid. Everyone was thrilled at being runners-up in the competition and the team look forward to training hard for the nationals to be held in March 2014. We would also like to thank all the staff who helped in preparation for the competition, but in particular Flt Lt Kirk and Plt Off Oakley for giving up their weekend to accompany the team and give much needed encouragement during the day.'
