Silver medal for Sophie

Published on isbi School News dated Wednesday 12th of March 2014

Godolphin Fifth Year Sophie Merritt won a silver medal at the Indoor National Athletics Championships held in Sheffield recently.

Competing in the U17 Shot Put finals, Sophie missed gold by 5cm 'which was really annoying' she said. However, she did achieve a Personal Best of 12.59m, which she was happy with.

Sophie, who is currently studying for her GCSEs, trains six times a week in Southampton. She does two weight sessions at the gym and four throwing sessions, leaving Salisbury immediately after school, going down to Southampton for training, and then getting home at about 9pm when she settles down to do her homework and study.

Sophie's dream is to represent Great Britain at the 2020 Olympic Games, being held in Tokyo, and like all dedicated athletes she is prepared to put in the long hours of training and hard work, alongside her school commitments.

On completion of her A-levels Sophie would like to study Sports Psychology in the United States and she has already received offers from two well-known US universities. Both have excellent training facilities which will enable Sophie to continue with her athletics career as well as her education.

Congratulations on your latest achievement Sophie, and good luck for the upcoming competitions!
