Published on isbi School News dated Wednesday 2nd of March 2011

On Tuesday 15 February, Caterham School U14 hockey team became Surrey Champions. Having successfully come through the heats on 20 January, their first match of the day was the semi final against Cranleigh School. Caterham were 2-0 up at half time and pushed on to add four more goals to complete a comprehensive 6-0 victory.

The other semi final saw Reed's School defeat Charthouse School. In a recent match Caterham and Reed's had played a thrilling game that ended in a draw so the Caterham team were nervous as they desperately wanted to be crowned Surrey Champions. In the final, which was played in steady rain, both teams were quite hesitant and the score remained 0-0 at half time. The team talk clearly galvanised the Caterham team as they played much better in the second half and controlled much of the game. However, they found it difficult to score until ten minutes from full time. From a short corner the ball pin-balled through the defence until Sam Murphy sent it into the left corner of the net to secure the winning goal.

Head of Hockey Andrew Patterson said: 'The boys have done fantastically well. Their hard work and determination saw them through a tough final that really tested their temperament. I think that they can now progress to the Regional Finals on March 8 with confidence.'
