Modern Languages Week at St Benedict's

Published on isbi School News dated Wednesday 22nd of October 2014

Modern Languages Week took over St Benedict's School with a programme of events to celebrate the different languages and cultures. Third Form parents and pupils enjoyed the French Family Evening with some traditional French refreshments and wine afterwards. Lower Fifth pupils studying Spanish and German visited the Europa Centre on two separate days, while the Lower Fourth embarked on their French Languages Journey. The week finished with the annual Third Form v Form Two Languages Quiz held in the Junior School Hall and European Languages Day in the Cloisters, festooned with national flags.

Kira Depal and Amy Vaughan enjoyed the French Family Evening: 'We did some learning of French role plays on different topics and, in the Cloisters, we had a quiz and some delicious French food and drink.' Spanish students were given the task of producing a radio broadcast and two Spanish dictionaries and went to a studio to record their broadcast. They also visited the shops in the Europa Centre where they practised buying and selling various Spanish produce. George Charlesworth went on the German trip. 'I felt that this was a good opportunity to practise our speaking and listening skills in a real life situation rather than just a class room. My favourite part about the trip was the tour around the German town because it gave me a small glimpse of what life in Germany may really be like.'

The Third Form rounded off the week with victory in the quiz by 14 to 12.
