Andrew Johnson has been appointed as Headmaster of St Benedict's School from 1st September, 2016 to succeed Chris Cleugh who will be retiring after being at the helm for nearly fifteen years. Andrew has been the Headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire since September 2006. The announcement was made by Pat Murphy-O’Connor, the Chairman of the Governing Board at St Benedict’s, who said: “To recruit Andrew as our new Head is a major coup for St Benedict's and one that speaks volumes for the hard work, dedication and success of Chris Cleugh and his staff. During his time at Stonyhurst, Andrew has achieved a great deal particularly around academia and the co-curricular. He is an excellent communicator and is very focused on getting the best out of every pupil. He has extensive experience in strategic planning and marketing and has demonstrated the drive and passion necessary to get things done. We are very excited to have Andrew join us and continue the legacy of Chris Cleugh. This is a new era for the School and I am sure that I speak for all of us in offering Andrew and his wife Dawn our best wishes and prayers.” Andrew Johnson attended Skinners School in Tunbridge Wells before studying Modern Languages at Bristol University. He started his teaching career at Douai School near Reading then moved to Winchester College as a teacher and later as Head of Modern Languages. He joined Birkdale School in Sheffield in September 2002 as Deputy Head before being appointed as Headmaster of Stonyhurst College in September 2006. Andrew and Dawn have two sons who will have started their University studies by the time they join St Benedict’s.
