Matisse inspires pupil’s stained glass window design

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 12th of January 2016

Eleven year old Olin Davies (Year 7) has produced the winning entry in the competition for the design of a stained glass window for the new Senior School Chapel at St Benedict’s, Ealing. Over a hundred pupils entered the competition, which was judged by a local stained glass artist – Sophie D’Souza – who will make the winning entry into the final window. Olin found his inspiration in the stained glass windows designed by Matisse. His design features the themes of Creation, the Holy Spirit and the Eucharist while his choices of tone and colour reflect the Ten Essentials of a Benedictine School: Discipline of daily practice, Prayer, Stability in relationships, Stewardship of creation, Thoughtful and responsive obedience, Humility, Mutual service, Love and forgiveness, Hospitality, Transformation towards full humanity. The quality of entries made the task of judging very difficult indeed. The runner-up was Isabella Ciavola Mooney, also from Year 7, whose design was used for the St Benedict’s Christmas e-card.
