Lord Borwick Visits The Unicorn School

Published on isbi School News dated Monday 21st of March 2016

Today The Unicorn School welcomed a visit from Lord Borwick, a member of the House of Lords, who joined us to encourage our pupils to engage with our country’s political and parliamentary process. Lord Borwick met with Year 9 pupils to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords, aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster. The Unicorn School, which celebrates its 25 year anniversary this year, will be introducing GCSE education from September. As the age range of our pupils increases we are encouraging their political awareness in readiness for their future in employment and society. Ms Vita Parvin – Year 9 teacher at The Unicorn School said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out, as it can sometimes seem far removed from their daily lives.” The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s “Peers in Schools” programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and has so far involved around 75,000 young people. This continuing outreach programme sends members of the House of Lords into schools/academies and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum.
