Maths Distinction for Sam, First for Old Swinford Hospital Sam Thomas, a student at Old Swinford Hospital Stourbridge has been awarded a Distinction in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Mathematical Olympiad.Presenting a medal and certificate to 13 year-old Sam, Headmaster Peter Jones said 'This is an incredible achievement for Sam and for Old Swinford Hospital, as it is the first time that a student from the School has been awarded a Distinction in this prestigious competition.'
Over 250,000 pupils nationally sat the UKMT Junior Mathematic Challenge and the top 1,200 candidates were invited to take part in the Olympiad. Only the top 25% were awarded Distinctions.
Students in the top Year 8 maths group at Old Swinford Hospital excelled in this year's UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. 16 of the boys received a Gold award, 3 a Silver and 1 a Bronze, the best results ever for OSH. Sam Thomas and Arthur Heung did especially well, by qualifying for the UK Junior Maths Olympiad.
Mathematics Teacher Mr David Ball said 'This has been an outstanding Year 8 class and an absolute pleasure to teach. I should like to congratulate all those involved.'
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in Mathematics. Established in 1996, it organizes national Mathematics competitions and other Mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils.
