COntinuing Success For BMS Para Athlete

Published by Bedford Modern School on Thursday 24th of November 2022

Year 12 student and para athlete Becca Scott medalled in two events at the National School Games this summer, as well as discovering that she was accepted for the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme (YTP) at the start of the autumn term.

The National School Games is an annual multi-sport event for UK elite athletes aged 17 years or younger, held this year at Loughborough University. Selection is based on performance; the top eight athletes in the country are accepted for each category, for which Becca belongs to Para Athletics.

Becca achieved Silver in the Para Long Jump with an impressive distance of 4.70m and Silver in the Para 100m with a time of 14.18 seconds, as well as competing in the Universal Relay with several teammates. She said that the event was: “A lot of fun. They livestream it and introduce you on camera, hyping you up. It’s usually the last event of the season and you are put into teams, so it’s a nice way to meet other athletes and there is a good atmosphere on the day.”

A few weeks later, on 08 September, Becca was informed that she had been selected for the 2022-24 YTP. This two-year course is the first step on the England Talent pathway and is open to young athletes from the age of 16. Becca was invited to apply as she is on the Paralympic Pathway. This year around 400 people applied, with spaces going to only 220 of the top athletes in the country.

The programme will consist of workshop days, held both online and at specialised delivery centres, where Becca will receive instruction from England Athletics coaching leads as well as spend one-on-one time with industry professionals to learn more about nutrition, sport psychology and media training. The course is designed to help talented young athletes develop their full potential to enter the professional sporting world, which Becca hopes to do as she is looking to compete in the 2024 or 2028 Paralympics.

Rebecca Woodgate, Head of Girls’ Sport at BMS, added: “It is exciting to hear of the success Becca achieved at the National School Games this Summer. We are incredibly proud of her continued achievement within the field of Para Athletics. To accomplish this whilst studying for GCSE examinations shows that Becca is a true athlete and has the drive and determination to continue building on these successes in the future. Her acceptance onto the YTP is yet another outstanding achievement. Well done.”
