Simon Curwen: Golden Globe Race 2022 - 1st at the Cape Town Gate

Published by Stowe School on Tuesday 29th of November 2022

Old Stoic, Simon Curwen (Chatham 76) is competing in the 2022 Golden Globe Race aboard the sloop rigged Biscay 36, Clara, which was built in 1976 at his homeport of Emsworth.

The race clock started with a start gun on 4 September and, after 9 weeks, Simon is leading the race and 1st to arrive at the Cape Town Gate.

The racecourse is an east-about circumnavigation starting and finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France.

One man, one boat, nonstop, around the world! With no technology and no outside assistance. Solo, non-stop and sailing like it's 1968.

Simon’s finish date was originally July but has been brought forward to the end of April, due to good weather and wind conditions.

Simon has had to overcome a technical failure (broken halyard) in Cape Town and had to seek safe anchorage, to rectify the fault.
