London Art experience for Sixth Form pupils

Published by Christ College on Tuesday 6th of December 2022

On 10th of November Christ College sixth form students travelled to London for a two day study trip to see a selection of world class Art exhibitions and collections in London. It was a packed itinerary and students made the most of their time, sketching in the galleries and recording their experiences.

Our first stop was The Tate Modern, housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames. The gallery houses contemporary art from around the globe. We had tickets to see two exhibitions, Paul Cezanne and Maria Batuszova. The Cezanne retrospective was a wonderful homage to the artist and a real favourite with the students. Batuszova’s fragile, egg like plaster sculptures were an inspirational celebration of natural form. We then walked along the river to the Courtauld Institute, housed in the magnificent and historic Somerset House and showing a world renowned collection of Renaissance and Impressionist work. The day finished with a practical workshop in the hotel to consolidate the day’s work and develop sketchbook drawings.

Our second day started with a visit to the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square where we were fortunate to see an exhibition of the painter Lucian Freud. Freud is considered one of the most important figurative painters of the past century. We also had time to study some of the many masterpieces housed there. Our final stop was to the Victorian and Albert Museum which gave an opportunity to view the collection of the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts, and design, before then heading home.
