Students Take To The Floor In the Yr 9 Model United Nations

Published by Ellesmere College on Wednesday 14th of June 2023

Lots of action today on the floor of Ellesmere's Year 9 MUN event, as delegates of countries from all across the world discussed the pressing issue of climate change. The creative solutions to the issues had no limits, as ideas such as dropping ice in the ocean floated through the air. But pleasantries exchanged and jokes out of their systems, the delegates forged ahead into the main debates.

A range of solutions were debated in the separate committee Rooms, each headed by our capable Yr 12 chairpersons. Room 1 discussed the USA's above average carbon emissions and meat consumption, whilst Room 2 conversed on Seychelles' plan to export their sea grass seeds to the rest of the world. Fierce debate raged in Room 3 over a proposed international car tax that came down to an incredibly close veto vote. And finally, Room 4 considered the possibility of constructing desalination plants in the Arabian gulf.

There were commendable efforts all round, but as the closing ceremony commenced, 4 delegates were awarded as the outstanding delegate award; Monty Cripps (USA), George Gration (Seychelles), Harvey Edwards (Tanzania) and Kitt Baillon (Jamaica). Ultimately, it was the demonstration of exemplary teamwork and communication skills, consistent with our High Performance Learning (HPL) values, that showed the real value of the experience.

A huge thank you to the Yr 12 delegation who organised and ran each of the committees and to the staff who helped facilitate the day! A fascinating experience for all involved!
