Gold DOFE Expedition For Our Upper Sixth

On the 30th August, 13 U6th pupils set off to Dartmoor on their Gold DofE expedition.

On the first day they were met with torrential rain and heavy fog which made navigation difficult and progress slow. Eventually, after several river crossings, some steep terrain, soggy feet, wet waterproofs, and pupils waist deep in a bog they made it to their campsite for the night. Torrential rain and strong winds meant that many a cold meal was had for dinner, but they were grateful for the shelter they received.

The second and third days consisted of more undulating trekking upon the moor as the groups were able to soak in the views from the Tors and explore the plethora of abandoned mines. One of the advantages to camping on Dartmoor was the ability to wild camp which allowed them to be truly isolated from civilisation, playing into the key message of DofE.

The final day saw an early start and a climb up some steep terrain. The groups then had to traverse a valley only using their compasses which proved a navigational challenge. This was then followed by a steep incline up to the highest point in Dartmoor, High Willhays which stands at an impressive 621m. Upon summiting the groups were grateful to get down off the moor and enjoyed drying their soggy feet.

Overall, the trip allowed 12 adventurous pupils to gain further insight into what getting stuck into nature is like and it’s safe to say that many were inspired and have further ambitions for the outdoors.
