Reed's becomes 1st school to win U19 National Boys and Girls titles

Published on isbi School News dated Sunday 7th of November 2010

The Reed's ski teams opened up the dry race season in the Regional Championships at Southampton where the girls' team cruised to the title of Regional Champions with new girls Ellie Pocock and Alex Buchanan joining Abby Carpenter and Katie Willis in a strong girls team. The senior boys 'A' quartet also had an easy time of things. New 6th former, Sam Stephens, led the way as the fastest skier on the day, followed closely by James Sieber. Both destroyed the field of 150 racers with 2 sub-10 second times to claim 1st and 2nd places and they took the Regional title by over 12 seconds.

Rory Shiells (4th Form) starred for the U15A team and raced to a top 10 boys finish. He was backed up by really good performances from Rowan Bollands, Oli Ricceri and new boy Callum Patience, as the juniors also won the Regional event.

However, the opposition was much tougher last weekend when the best teams from all over the country come together for the English finals at Rossendale ski centre.

In the U19 girls' races, Ellie Pocock put in 2 excellent runs on her way to being the fastest girl skier on the day and she was backed up by good performances from Abby Carpenter and Katie Willis. Alex Buchanan completed the strong girls' team that proved too quick for the rest of the field as the girls went on to win gold medals and the title of National Champions.

The U16 boys came up against some experienced racers. However, Rory Shiells was in excellent form and received good support from Sam Hinton, Rowan Bollands and Ollie Ricceri, as the team raced into second place to take the silver medals.

The U19 boys team also faced some strong opposition. Luke Steyn, just back from injury posted 2 quick times to build on the good safe runs from Roy Steudle. James Sieber had ski problems that slowed him down but Sam Stephens blasted the 2 fastest times of the day to put Reed's into first place and win the National title under 19 for the 2nd time.

Reed's becomes the first school to win the U19 boys and girls titles in the same year!
