Dartmoor Adventure

Published on isbi School News dated Monday 8th of November 2010

Year 5 girls from The Abbey Junior School spent an exciting and exhilarating week at Heatree Activity Centre in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park. They enjoyed bright autumnal weather for their many outdoor activities including moorland hikes and river rafting (on barrel rafts that they made in teams!)

There was also plenty of practical Geography, with the study of tributaries and meanders involving getting wellies full of riverwater and a walk along the River Lemon culminating in an ice-cream on the beach! A re-enactment of granite quarrying and iron-age bartering and cooking introduced History to the outdoor curriculum.

The girls also really enjoyed the experience of staying in dormitories and sharing bedtime hot chocolate and games with their friends.
