Dr Richard Maloney

Uppingham School is a vibrant and energetic full boarding school for girls and boys aged 13-18. Accommodating 800 pupils across 15 boarding houses, the School offers state-of-the-art science, sports and music facilities, alongside its strong academic profile and excellent pastoral care. Alumni include Stephen Fry, Rick Stein, McFly’s Harry Judd and Phil Spencer of Location, Location, Location.

Founded in 1584, Uppingham is a school with a long and proud heritage, but is fundamentally forward-looking in its values and approach. It offers a warm, compassionate and mutually supportive environment where pupils are appreciated for who they are; where they are given the skills and tools they need to navigate their own path in life.

Uppingham prides itself on a longstanding commitment to a holistic education, first introduced by its famous former headmaster Edward Thring (HM 1853-1887). Within its walls, young people are guided, nurtured and inspired to achieve excellence and flourish.

Uppingham is a seven day a week boarding school. When pupils aren’t being inspired and challenged in their academic lessons, they are able to enjoy co-curricular activities and enrichment programmes, as well as being able to immerse themselves in an active life within their House.

The Houses are an immersive, family-oriented environment; a hub of communal activity, as well as a place to rest, study and reflect. Pupils return to their Houses for mealtimes each day to dine together, which is an important and distinguishing feature of our pastoral care.

Located in the picturesque market town of Uppingham in Rutland, the School offers an outstanding and well-rounded education within a campus known for its historic architectural beauty, natural splendour, supportive teachers and exceptional pastoral care.

Open Days, Visits & Events

04-10-2025 - Visting Day: Fourth Form

Our Visiting Days begin at 9.30am with coffee in the Memorial Hall, where there is a chance to meet the Headmaster, the Director of Admissions, other senior staff, a number of pupils, housemasters and housemistresses.

After the Headmaster’s address at 10.00am sharp, there is a tour of the School lasting an hour, followed by visits to two of the houses that are open for the day. Usually, two boys’ houses and two girls’ houses are open, and parents and prospective pupils are free to visit any combination of these.

Refreshments and snacks are available at the conclusion of the tours during which time the Director of Admissions talks about the application process and other staff are available to meet. The day concludes by 1.00pm.

For entry into the Fourth Form, Visiting Days are open to families with children aged nine or ten, in Years 5 and 6 (the two year groups that precede our entrance pre-tests in Year 7). Visiting Days for these cohorts are available each term.

Which School Advisor

It’s a school where “academic ambition matters” and where teachers aim to “bring out the best” in students both intellectually and creatively.

Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made. There’s such a friendly vibe. You can’t help but walk around with a smile on your face. You never feel on the outside here.

He absolutely thrived at Uppingham. They find what makes the kids tick and are seriously supportive.

Good Schools Guide

The school offers an intellectually rigorous and adaptable education with outstandingly good provision for music, art and drama. Though rural, Uppingham is not isolated and pupils benefit from the excellent relations the school and town enjoy. Surroundings are idyllic, opportunities to learn,...
